CV Help - (Writing a CV) Common CV error - number twenty two. Not spelling out the achievements

Writing a CV Common CV error -  number twenty two.   There is no place for reticence when writing a successful CV.   It’s time to present your  very best achievements in the best possible light . Spelling out your achievements really does mean a “ this – means – that ” approach.   In other words: bringing in a project completion 3 months ahead of forecast is impressive, but....  what did it mean to your employer ?   When you describe this as: “completed major project 3 months ahead of forecast and saved £30,000 in contractor’s fees”, you have identified yourself as a  skilled, motivated manager with an eye firmly on the bottom line .   What recruiter wouldn’t want to discuss your approach to business in more detail at an interview?

CV Help - (Writing a CV) Common CV error - number fourteen. First person

Writing a CV Common CV error - number fourteen .   Writing a CV well  is difficult: commencing every sentence with “I” makes the task almost impossible.   Successfully writing a  CV   does not mean that you use a writing style that you would use for a letter or a report. As your CV will clearly have been written about you, you can use a punchier style of writing and omit the first person style. “I was responsible for successfully managing a sales team of 12 people.....” can easily be expressed as “managed 12 sales people: increased overall sales revenue by 34% in 2009”.   By removing the first person style it will help you to focus on a more concise and relevant style.   It is also somewhat easier to write about your achievements by removing the “I” as some writers (and readers) find that it can sound boastful.

CV Help - (Writing a CV) Common CV error - number seventeen. Tedious style

Writing a CV Common CV error - number seventeen .   A  successful CV  or cover letter will be well written, concise, and accurate and will  present the information in an easy to understand format that is easy on the eye.   A rambling, conversational approach to writing your CV will not encourage the reader to continue their interest in the document and this will lead to its rejection.   Avoid the empty buzzwords :   dynamic, visionary, team player, focused and every other empty word or phrase that lacks supporting evidence.   Recruiters  want  proof and evidence of success and achievements  and these will not need dressing up in buzzwords.

CV Help - (Writing a CV) Common CV errors - number nineteen. Burying the good stuff

Writing a CV Common CV errors - number nineteen .   A  well written CV  should shine a light on the  key qualifications, achievements and successes  that you want to bring to the recruiters attention.   Do not expect them to work out why you may be the ideal candidate if you  bury the good stuff among the irrelevant .   Recruiters simply will not spend time unravelling mysteries and puzzles and trying to link together facts and clues from your CV.   The easy choice for a recruiter is to simply move on to a  CV that is better written and presented .

CV Help - (Writing a CV) Common CV error - number twenty one. No action words

Writing a CV Common CV error - number twenty one.   Use action words  (verbs) in your CV to illustrate success and achievement. Think in terms of “ achieved this ” –“ completed that ” –“ improved ..etc”.   Add detail  : “achieved  highest number of new accounts in 2009” – “completed major database project update four months ahead of forecast” – “improved customer retention rates by 37%”.   This approach will move your writing away from the: “I was responsible for – I reported to – I managed a sales team of......”.  No one is too interested in what you were responsible for or supposed to do : recruiters are really interested in  what you achieved .
